The Macallan Estate Oak is released exclusively for World Duty Free (WDF) – the duty free operator for the Italian-owned airport company, BAA. It retails for £34.99 (~€45). WDF has shops at Heathrow, Stansted, Gatwick, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Southampton airports.
“We anticipate it will be a huge success with people wanting to make a difference to the environment,” said William Ovens, The Edrington Group’s global travel retail area director.
The whisky has been matured in both European (ex-oloroso sherry) and American (ex-bourbon) oak. The bottling is without an age statement and comes without a box, to reduce the amount of waste. The labels are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and are sourced from responsibly managed resources.
Tastingnote: Pale straw in colour, there are hints of coconut and vanilla on the nose, culminating in a soft, smooth finish with a lingering gentle touch of dried fruit.
But this is not the first time Macallan Distillery sells a bottle with a tree-planting add-on. Just under three years ago the distillery launched a bottling called The Macallan Woodland Estate. That bottling was a 12 year old only sold through the distillery webshop and visitor centre – and came with exclusive box. The price for this bottling was £95 (~€120).
