As the line-up of Classic Malts continue to increase, so does Diageo’s wood finish series. The latest member of the Classic Malts group to be finished in a special type of cask is Deeside’s Royal Lochnagar.
Royal Lochnagar Distillers Edition has been finished (double matured in Diageo-speak) in ex-Muscat casks (the same type of cask used for the Caol Ila DE). It’s set for release later this autumn, and has a RRP (Recommended Retail Price) of £40.59 (399,20 NOK) and is bottled at 40%. It’s unknown if Norway is set to receive any bottles in the near future (at the time of writing the DE-bottlings available in Norway are those from Lagavulin, Caol Ila, Talisker and Oban). Our neighbours Sweden are getting 1000 bottles in November, in time for Christmas. The RSP (Recommended Systembolaget Price) in Sweden will be 549 SEK (£46.52 / 459,40 NOK).
The official tasting notes are as follows:
Appearance: Rich amber, with polished copper tones.
Nose: Immediate strawberry jam, bags of jelly babies, then a richly malty heart with malt loaf and Dundee cake. With water, sweeter (rich fresh fruit aromas, as in a village fruit shop) and a hint of almond oil.
Palate: Oily. Fruity, with a silky cereal smoothness.
Finish: Soft and biscuity, as with old-fashioned fig rolls. Lovely late warmth.
